Years ago when i was in my first home and could barley pay rent i would record meter numbers at beginning of month and at night turn meter upside down so it would run backwards. I did good for about 7 months then utility company installed a new meter with new lock that i couldnt get into without them noticing. We still dont have digital here yet and you can use strong magnets to ' slow' down the wheels but make sure you remove them during the day or youll be caught. Also you can order security bits that will allow u to remove glass and calibrate to slow down the wheels with little chance of being caught if they dont have lock rings around them. Just read from newspaper, some apartment owners were asked to pay arrears after changing to new meter. The residents were complaining because there is no way they can temper with the meters as they are not accessible to them. Today, someone told me electricity bill is expected to increase by some 20% if you change to new meter. TNB has been accusing people tempered with old meter and claiming money everywhere after they installed the new meter. There seems something not right here?
Anyone has any knowledge about the new meter? Who is there to ensure the new meter is not temper with? Ini Malaysia boleh!
The fact remains that its more expensive to generate your own electricity (if you've any ideas in generating your own by fuel powered generator), simply because of fuel cost. Unless you live next to a reasonably fast flowing river, that idea could be doable. I'm not sure but I think there's a regulation that you're NOT simply allowed to generate your own electricity on a full scale for your home. It seems doable but there's technical implications and consequences that your immediate neighbors aren't going to like, noise generated for example. Bottom line, at current rates, its the cheapest electricity on tap. Just that we live in a hot humid country that energy for cooling and most comfortability is going to burn a hole in your pocket.
Before the new meter, my bill was around RM120 to RM140 after changing it has gone to btw RM180 to RM250. I don't understand why i did not buy any new appliance and my usage of aircond and water heaters remains same before meter changed, my bill was around Rm28-45, i got 1 friedge, 1 aircon- 1 hP ( not always turn on), I used 80% energy saving bulbs, I used water heater when temp is low like raining day, pot heater turn off when go to work. Even i turn on aircon at night for 2-3 hours.and I notice the red light blinking not really fast.but, I'll expect the bill wil hike up to rm50 above.wait for bill come, i wil update again.
For my case, They change my meter on 2nd March, and they made an estimate bill on 20th March base on old meter, with 1000unit use. (53,891.00 - 54,891.00), but meter change at 54012.7. I have the change meter photo, while the contractor was doing the job. So for home owner with old meter, please take photo on meter when they change meter. Below my Email to [email protected], and also call them up.

Thats weird, I stand besides the contractor and watch him every single move.the old meter reading on the transparent exactly wrote with market pen(permenant), now the new meter reading is 93, old meter reading was 28119, i guess 28119 + 93 = 28212? With diff 189?
Not sure the calc is correct.if its correct.my bill is increasing. My old meter usage was around 139.
MALAYSIAN CONSUMERS ARE REALLY THE BEST BUNCH IN THE WORLD. Have to pay utility bil to a company which monopolize the business for more than 60 years, but this is not the only problem. Have to obediently pay the blardy bill but still have to induce countless stress when the monopolized company change the meter - have to take a photo of the old meter, - have to possess an evidence of the old meter readings, - have to incur shock and follow-up by legs work when the bill is abnormally different with previous, - have to figure out how the blardy bill is calculated or estimated, etc, etc, etc. What's this 'KUMPULAN WANG TENAGA BOLEH BAHARU' item which appears after the calculation of the units used? The amount ranges from 0.50 sen to RM1.50 and started appearing from Jan 2012 onwards. Do check your monthly TNB bills to see if you are charged. P/S: My Dec2011 bill has an item called 'INDIV.
STREET LIGHT' OF 0.14 sen. Wonder what's this? This is our 1% contribution for the 'Feed in tariff scheme'. To pay for those who qualify and successful in installing sustainable energy systems like solar PV panels. STREET LIGHT', you must have requested for a street light to be installed near your house.

TQ PDL, your reply led me to where it's clearly stated that w.e.f. Dec 01, 2011, TNB customers who consume more than 300 units of electricity each month will have to pay the 1% contribution to the Renewable Energy Fund. STREET LIGHT', you must have requested for a street light to be installed near your house. This is puzzling as I didn't request for a street light to be installed near my house.
Luckily, it's only 14sen and it occurred once!:eek. Dear Citizens of USJ Forum I am residing in USJ 11. About a couple of months back TNB rolled in to replace the old meters along my street with the new digital ones. Immediately after that I was hit with my first bill using the digital meter reading.
It was easily RM40 higher on average as compared to my old meter read bills. However, it is the second and current bill that floored me. I am being hit with a RM2,142.80 bill for period of 31 days.
I have just recovered enough to pick myself off the floor and posting this entry in the forum now. I would like to do a quick survey of those of you 'fortunate' souls who have been targeted by TNB to replace their existing meters with the 'new-and-improved' digital meters.
How as your experience been with the new digital meters so far? Is this a TNB scam to collect more from the people?
A 4 kWp Solar BIPV = RM60,000 (Cost of Capital Expenditure - Capex). In Australia, they can put up a 4.29kW system for AUD 7,603 (after Govt rebates)! Even WITHOUT the rebates - the cost is almost 50% cheaper than the 60K needed here in Malaysia. Makes you wonder why?? The long time company is here to thrive and prosper eternally for all or any shortcomings this land have inherited, I don't think the garmen have ever encouraged anyone to generate their own letrik in their own homes, moreover terminate the utility supply. THEY JUST DON'T WANT GIVE YOU ANY REAL OPPORTUNITY!
You're anticipated to do nothing but buy n use energy from already provided sources. Simple as that?
Unless you wanna move back to nature, live on free fresh air n sunshine.got a choice here, which they've nothing to say nor stop you. I really really have to think or spend on something to seek an alternative to this utility board.it'll eventually be more of a burden and less savings as time goes. Already mulling of terminating my land line phone AND STREAMYX!

Don't pengsan yet.check yr new meter reading and compare with the printed reading on yr current bill.am sure the estimate (this bill came via post?? ) will show reading way above yr new meter.many of my neighbours incl. Myself kena from rm1800 to rm6000.00. If confirm.reading or estimate is way above.bring yr bill to TNB SS15 to complaint.they will change for you.do remember to write down the new meter reading for them as they will use it to re-bill you and then settle on the spot there cos the bill have no bar coding and can't pay in other authorised outlets. I have just done a payment for a clients' house where the meter reading was almost RM700 for a intermediate terrace occupied by a couple only.
When I checked the bill against the new meter the reading on the bill was way higher than the meter though the bill was a week old by then. When I called TNB, I was asked to just take the meter reading and inform them, with the date of reading. They will re-mail the new bill. However if one doesn;t want to wait, just go to the TNB office in SS15 and get the new bill on the spot. I got it on the spot and the bill was reduced to about RM370.
Yesterday I got my new meter, sigh! So, just to share this info in case anyone wants to do it, TNB has a system for self-reading the meter. One just needs to fill up an application form and email it together with an IC copy or one can submit at the TNB office to start it off. For further details, the website is http://www.tnb.com.my/tnb/application/uploads/uploaded/BorangPermohonanSMR.pdf.
The new meter is much more accurate comparing to an old electro mechanical meter thats more than a decade old. The new meter doesn't have mechanical moving parts and just depend on measuring current consumption of the cable that goes through which is converted with analog to digital readout circuitry to readable KWH consumption. Its principally the same as a hand held digital current clamp multimeter with a digital readout. It can be as accurate less than 1%. With this accuracy, do expect a jump in your bills by a noticible percentage compared to a decades old meter that would have been deteriorated or inconsistent. Of course digital meters aren't bulletproof and electronics circuitry can go bonkers.
Its also depends on the type and quality of A/D digital converter chip, and parts used. I reckon they'd be highly accurate for at least a decade, where it may start to falter or fail due to age, humidity, temperature and enviroment which all solid state electronics are vulnerable. This time its higher accuracy and technological advance that may contribute to your discomfort!;-) More unfortunate is the rising cost of energy which will hurt your pocket. I reckon people could afford and not grumble much paying RM100 or less/month but with most having air conditioners, desiring more comfort in your home is going to cost you, no 2 ways about that.
Malaysia is a hot humid place, and air con is the primary route for more comfort. If only the temperature was like Cameron Highlands! I'm sure TNB won't be earning much!
Yes, can't deny they do profit from a natural circumstance. I followed the advice given by the TNB contractor to REDUCE my HEATING (water, ironing etc. ) usage, so now we take daily afternoon 'cold' baths while evening still the same 'hot' bath.
Monthly bill DROP by RM20.00 per month with new meter!! Every bit counts! If you think your fridge is more oversized than needed, perhaps time to change the fridge to a smaller one. I estimate a medium fridge (350 lit?) to consume about Rm30-40/month. Yes, a modern fridge HAVE a defrost heater.
THAT's the one that is the current bleeder, NOT entirely the compressor which is roughly 1/4 to 1/3rd horse power. BTW, one tip! Should you think the actual location of your fridge is the best? Think again, perhaps it is perhaps not. You need to maintain a minimum 1 foot gap (more the better) behind your fridge for the compressor compartment and behind of fridge 'to breath'. A cooler location optimizes the cooling efficiency of the fridge and thus consuming whats only needed for optimum operating performance.
Also, do a total internal washdown twice a year, for healthsake and the performance. A fridge located in a hot area will be inefficient to some percentage and consume more energy than it should.
Perhaps look into this area. As said, every bit counts! IF you're keen on saving. If not.be my guest and dismiss all what I've said. Total washdown some every 10 months.trouble is, contractor do this can be costly. Rm250 and above a pop to dismantle, wash and reinstall.
Wanna reckon if this is another jab at scare mongering? Water supply issues, now electricity, what next? (consistent fresh air is already threatened by annual haze), petrol, cooking oil, coconuts, rice, garlic, vegetables?
Still think Malaysia is some a heaven? I'm reckoning Selangor is far too industrialized and housing is expanding too rapidly till utility supply can't meet the high demand all the time. I think state govenment should look into slowing down or stop more big fat factories that may consume most energy while residents are slowly being deprived. Look at Subang Mewah USJ1 area.
Somewhat 2/3 is industrial or commercial land, a quick personal observation tells me a lot of them looks sleepy or defuct. These lands should be re-classified for residential homes someday soon. Seems very apparent that lots of people are paying more since the meter change exercise started. I've said it before, this new meter is more accurate than the old ones. Just expect to face more charges in future and TNB is likely heading for multiplying their revenue henceforth.
As for prepaid, its existed since some years ago. I've seen prepaid meters installed at another township but I'm guessing not in large numbers.
Consumers just have to top up their TNB prepaid card only at TNB office and none other, then back home, stick the card at the meter for supply continuance. The meter is installed inside the home premise, not outside. I suppose this was intended when the homes were designed to accommodate a prepaid type meter. I reckon this was some limited trial at certain areas, not nationwide. It could be a future trend, who knows. Its to their advantage, not yours.
You refuse to top up, you're ^.^%$!! I always think air conditioning form a large part of most home's energy consumption, unless one can do without it, the bill could be much lower. Sorry, but I reckon, we're in an era where all this may add up to higher cost of living as energy costs have risen quite a bit. Just have to earn more to keep up. Big screen TV are quite current hungry too, few hundred watts there too. May average out to minimum Rm50 per month?just guessing.
On for many hours too? Most may still insist on electrical rice cooker rather than on a gas stove.
I'm sure many still insist on air conditioning during the night for most comfortable sleep. Each home with some air conditioning and other common appliances frequently in use.average out at Rm200/month.Is it a lot?perhaps not but this is the price for decent urban comfort and convenience. A lot of the bills incurred is because we do not switch off at the source or the wall socket. Even though it is on standby, it may still consume 40% of its normal operating cost.
That is a lot when you add up all the appliances in the house. Before I sleep I switch off everything at the wall socket and it really really help a lot. Some even say must pull out the plug from the wall socket but I did not do that. The only thing left on at night is the fridge. Anyway it is a good habit and once you do that regularly, it is easy.
Even though it is on standby, it may still consume 40% of its normal operating cost. How did you arrive that figure? I don't know of any appliance that'll consume that percentage in standby mode. A high figure means the appliance isn't energy efficient. To my own knowledge of electronics, only appliances that implement switching PSU or soft start, like current generation of TV, LCD screens, some consumer AV, and computers are only a few watts in standby mode. As for these category of appliances, its prudent to switch it off entirely at the plug or electrical source. Other home appliances do NOT consume any electricity when its switched off at the appliance.

Other home appliances do NOT consume any electricity when its switched off at the appliance. I read it in some of the manuals where they state the standby power. Usually for power hungry appliances. Not all are that much but quite a lot are substantial to make a difference. It is only when I started switching off at the source that I noticed big differences in my bills.
It really works. I have the shock of my life when the new meter is installed, and mix explanation given by TNB personal. After meter installed, average daily usage is 45 unit. What I notice is, even when there is no one at home, during working hour, it still clock 9units!.-' From 9am - 5pm, only fridge is ON.
Please advice. Perhaps you can think the other way around You have been underpaid the actual electricity consumption due to the inefficient old meter. The new meter is now accurately reflect you usage.
Are you guys serious, opps I have to call the utility provider to change my meter to digital then.:(:(:( Depend your A/C HP, and temperature setting. Assuming it run non stop for 10 hours and each ac is 1KW per hour. You use 30KW per day multiply by 30 days, you use 900kw per month. Each KW assume average out is 40cents. So you pay about RM 360 per month for AC Of course, A/C compressor switch off after cooling, so the rate I put maybe on the high side for 3 units of 1HP.
Maybe in the region of 250 to 300 just for the a/c + others equipments your monthly bill should be there. I move to USJ 2 end of last year. Still using old Meter and average usage is 300KW per month, Mar-12 I change to new meter, I calculate the average usage is around that same, actually slightly lower around 280KW. BUT this bloody TNB contractor who change my meter did not update the system, and about 5 months the stupid TNB did not followup and i was not paying anything for 5 months, and I have to do own followup. In Aug, they finally change the record to new meter, and charge me 1711 KW usage for ONE month of Aug #@@#$, I go complain, and make so many trip finally they contra back.
Because if I use one month 1711kw I need to pay much higher. If they break the 1711 to 5 months, i save few hundred. Bloodly hell. For all that get notice to change meter, please take photos of old meter, and new meter when they change. Like what i did. The contractor will put a small board with the detail beside the old meter, and take photo. You take one photo too.
Never believe they do everything. Not happy with what is going on, I went online to search. According to an organization in USA, analog meter are reliable and accurate. Digital meter is even more accurate, by 0.5% to 1%. In USA, analog meters are still being used. The reason digital meter were used in USA is to enable centralize database and reporting.
The type of digital meter installed here allows 1% error. Therefore, if the bill is anything more than 5% higher than before, there is something not right! Cml, I have the same thinking, from Annual Audit Report we knew that a lot of time to get a RM1 thing the tax payer has to pay RM10 to RM100.
So, be very very worried when government said they are giving you money! You have to foot the bill, Najib is not going to sell his property to give you money!
According to report I read, digital meter must be calibrated at factory and also right after installation. I do not know if it is calibrated in the factory, it is certainly not calibrated at site. We really won't know.they just install, you get charged, they expect you to pay promptly or its POTONG! They're not going to give 2 hoots to anyone what consumers think.prompt payment is all they care as long as one is a consumer.nothing else.been that, always that, forever that.end of story. Unless a group of people can prove that these meters are inaccurate, a suit could be initiated.but who's going to start it?
No-one I know of.noise ada lah! I think pakatan should engage the services of some independent bodies to verify the meters. I think they should begin to act the part if they want to run the country after the next elections. No point just making noise.

To expect the consumers to do that would be a bit too much. They should have the resources to do that. All they need to do is to take a few of the meters and send it off to some labs to get it verified that it has been calibrated correctly. If there is any hanky panky it should be very good for them to use as bullets in the next election. So we are all ready for a change?
If you look at Selangor,Penang, Kedah, the governments have to work carefully so that they wouldn't be caught by BN. Frankly, Pakatan has nothing impressed me so far, but the fact that both government trying hard to catch the other is really a good thing.
Therefore, I think it is good to change the leadership at Putrajaya. Furthermore, the present government has not performed up to par in the most important area - education. IMO, education is the backbone of a country. If it is good everthing else will fall into right places. Let any political party GET USED TO BE VOTED OUT if they cannot do the job efficiently. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY to make ANY PARTY do the job right by the people, for the people.Don't believe me? Go read how other democratic governments works - UK, USA, Australia.etc.
My friend and I did a research on those fuel cell generators for homes. There is one by an Aussie manufacturer costing AUD100k. At this price it is a non-starter here. It will take forever to recover the cost. There is also the legal compliance aspect.
Just check out the solar alternatives that the Aussie have down under. (damn cheap summore!!) Best part - their Govt also subsidises the cost if the home owner is truly interested in installing it. And then the excess energy is allowed to be sold to the GRID which also helps pay for the system. My buddy in Perth has had the system installed at their home and so far. It makes more energy that their house uses. So they get to make money on top of saving money on their energy bill. Just check out the solar alternatives that the Aussie have down under.

There is currently a glut of solar panels in China. Hopefully it will reduce the cost of the system to make it viable here. The last Tenaga bill I received was on 22/8/13. A new bill arrived yesterday, 11/9/13, an interval of 21 days. The amount billed against the units consumed is pretty normal.
Tnb Digital Meter
However the latest bill included a debit amount of RM1020. Wtf is this:mad:? I settle the bill promptly and in full every month and the payment is always reflected in the latest bill. Why this debit amount? What is it that I own them? As far as I an concern I owe them nothing. Any other USJ residents who also got this debit?
FYI, my meter is the second generation digital type. TNB replaced the first one some months ago. Bslee, did you pay the amount? I am going to the nearest TNB office soon to seek an explanation. They have to waste my f.
WHY on earth should I pay them anything I don't owe?.meanwhile you WILL waste your petrol and F.time. This is ALL UNNECESSARY and burden consumers because its THEIR ERROR to rectify the matter if there's issues!
TYPICAL LOCAL WORK CULTURE.4 counters seen, 1-2 counters operational (you mean no staff ah?countless people are unemployed lah!). Worst is the onus is on customer to seek redress on any dispute or issues. YOU GO.they don't come to you and correct the matter always. Subang Square SS15 is the only nearest place to settle matters for Subang folk.and there's always a long queue everyday.right up to 5pm. But if pay bills, there's a ATM like kiosk 2 doors away from the office. All are encouraged to pay bills at the ATM for bills and notices.just key in your account number, and punch in the amount you wish to pay by card or cash.

I think the office is now only for the purpose of administration and customer issues. The last Tenaga bill I received was on 22/8/13.

TNB replaced the first one some months ago. I received my bill few days ago and it is for 21 days. As per the latest bill, no debit amount. Went to TNB SS15 this morning to seek clarification. The explanation is that the last meter was faulty and under-reading. They provide a detailed computer print-out. In post #22 of this thread I commented that TNB changed my first generation digital meter to a new one in March 2013.
So, estimating my average consumption (Jan to Mar 2013 with a faulty meter) plus actual reading (after meter replacement, up to July 2013) I was billed and paid RM1869.04 when the total should be RM2889.05 resulting in a shortfall of RM1020.01 which was duly debited to my current bill. Dividing RM2889.05 by six months works out to my monthly average. Can't argue with that. So, pay up lah.:D.
